Sa churaclam seo tá na prionsabail leanbhlrnacha atá le fáil sa churaclam roimhe seo Curaclam na Bunscoile (1971). Aithníonn sé trí aidhm oideachais bhunscoile:
- an leanbh a chumasú chun saol iomlán a leanúint agus a p(h)oitinseal fin a bhaint amach mar dhuine ann nó inti fin
- an leanbh a chumasú chun forbairt a dhéanamh mar neach sóisialta ag maireachtáil agus ag comhoibriú le daoine eile chun chur le leas na sochaí uile
- chun an leanbh a ullmhú doideachas breise agus d'fhoghlaim ar feadh an saoil
Tá an curaclam foghlaimeoir-lárnaithe. Leagtar béim ann ar litearthacht, ar uimhríocht agus teanga agus san am cíanna freagraíonn sé ar na riachtanais sorathraithe san eolaíocht agus sa teicneolaíocht, san oideachas sóisialta pearsanta agus sláinte agus sa tsaorntacht.
Cuirtear an curaclam i láthair i s réimse ábhar agus is ionann sin agus 11 ábhar. Is ar na hdaris phatrnachta ar leith atá an fhreagracht i gcónaá as an gcuraclam in oideachas reiligiúnach do bhunscoileanna a fhorbairt agus a chur i bhfeidhm.
Mntear na príomhaidhmeanna, prionsabail agus gnithe den churaclam sa Ramhr agus tá siad ina gcltaca ar an minteoireacht agus an fhoghlaim i ngach ábhar den churaclam. Cuirtear cipis curaclaim (ina bhfuil spriocanna ábhar agus snithe n snithaonaid) agus treoirlnte do mhinteoir ar fil do gach ábhar den churaclam. Tá s d'aidhm san iomln ag Curaclam na Bunscoile na leana a chumasú chun dileil le hilimh an tsaoil le muinn agus le cinnteacht anois agus sa todhcha (Ramhr, lch.6)
The curriculum incorporates the child centred principles of its predecessor, Curaclam na Bunscoile (1971). It identifies three primary aims of primary education:
- to enable the child to live a full life as a child and to realise his or her potential as a unique individual
- to enable the child to develop as a social being through living and co-operating with others and so contribute to the good of society
- to prepare the child for further education and lifelong learning.
The curriculum is learner-centred. It emphasises the importance of literacy, numeracy, and language, while at the same time responding to changing needs in science and technology, social personal and health education, and citizenship.
The curriculum is presented in six subject areas comprising 11 subjects. The development and implementation of the curriculum in religious education in primary schools remains the responsibility of the relevant patron bodies.
